Listening to Thai tones repeatedly over time embeds them into your long-term memory. As a bonus, you'll naturally expand your Thai vocabulary along the way.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a standardized system of symbols used to represent every distinct sound found in human spoken language.
If you have ever looked up a word in a dictionary and seen strange-looking symbols in brackets next to it (like /fəˈnɛtɪk/), you have seen the IPA in action. It was created in 1888 by the International Phonetic Association to provide a universal "code" for pronunciation that works across all languages.
Thai is a tonal language, meaning the "shape" of your voice (high, low, rising, etc.) changes the meaning of a word.
The Problem: Standard alphabets don't have a way to show pitch.
The IPA Fix: Most Thai-IPA systems add "tone marks" to the symbols.
For example:
/maː/ (Mid tone) = "Come"/màː/ (Low tone) = "Shoulder"/mâː/ (Falling tone) = "Crazy"/máː/ (High tone) = "Horse"/mǎː/ (Rising tone) = "Dog"We provide you with the IPA alongside the Thai Script to help you get started. Once you are more confident you can toggle it off in settings for a true test of understanding.
